Growing Guide

Commonly known as the Swan River Daisy, Brachyscome (also known as Brachycome) is a half-hardy annual which makes a pretty addition to beds, borders and patio pots in summer.

Brachyscome iberidifolia 'Azure' boasts a colourful mix of blue, pink and white daisy blooms above finely cut foliage. Originating from Australia, these compact plants are drought resistant.

Sow indoors from March to May in pots or trays of moist seed compost and lightly cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite to a maximum depth of 3mm. Place in a propagator or seal inside a polythene bag until germination occurs. Put in a warm place and keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged.

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 9cm pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise young plants to outdoor conditions before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm apart or plant into baskets and containers of good multi-purpose compost.

Feed and water until the plants are fully established, or if in a container water regularly as needed. Although the flowers are short-lived, regular deadheading will promote plenty of fresh blooms to take the place of those that have faded.

iberidifolia varieties are annuals, whereas ciliaris and miltifida are perennials.

TOP TIPS

Blooms do not tend to last long, so prolong blooming time by deadheading, and sow seeds every three to four weeks in order to maintain a continuous bloom in the garden.

Plants are sensitive to over-watering as they have small leaves. Brachyscome love light, and if growing in a container it is important to give then a constant supply of low level fertiliser.
